Full Biography

Michael Toole is a long time resident of Mississauga, Ontario and an active member within his community. He is the son of an amateur photographer (father) and a painter (mother). Given his parental influences, Michael tends to look for new and inventive ways to present his work. Whether that be combining different exposures or entirely different photographs to create a single compelling piece of art, his work continues to evolve. He is never satisfied with the act of simply recording information with the camera but is always looking at different methods of creating and presenting images so that the final products are truly unique. His images are presented on board with resin, on dibond, on acrylic and on paper behind glass.

Michael has received several awards for his work and is well represented by galleries in Toronto, Ottawa, and Muskoka. He has shown his work in New York City and will be showing in Miami this year. His work is held in numerous private and corporate collections all over North America.

Artist’s Statement

“Photography has always interested me and I have always found black and white film photography to be intriguing. After years of shooting film with 20 to 30 year old equipment, I decided to switch mediums and start working with digital photography equipment. This change led to a great deal of experimentation and a new appreciation for photography. Thus, I commenced taking pictures seriously and after taking several trips abroad (India, Portugal, Poland, Panama, and Cuba). After showing friends and colleagues some of the pictures from these trips, I was encouraged to pursue photography as a second career. I was persuaded to show my work by a gallery owner in Toronto, and I commenced doing so in 2005.

My work is difficult to describe as it is always changing and moving in different directions. Currently, I have been experimenting with collage type images and building dimensional qualities into my images. My images are generally presented on canvas with resin and on board with resin and they tend to be large in size (30×48 to 48×84).

I have been working as a professional photographer now since 2005. I do still work with film but predominantly in digital photography. A great deal of the work I show is taken in various places around the world and in the Toronto area. I do some event photography, portraits, and commercial/commissioned work as well.”  Michael Toole
