Hyper-realism as an art form is fairly new. The word itself was coined in the mid-1970s.
Briefly, while photo-realism and hyper-realism are forms of realism and rely heavily on photographs reference, photo-realism strives to mimic the reference with all the photographic artifacts such as areas that are out of focus or distorted by the lens.Hyper-realism, on the other hand, strives to strip away any distortion by the camera and strives to mimic how a human eye actually perceives the world. For example, we do not see the depth of field because our eyes refocus so quickly.
As a means of communication, Hyper-realism offers an extended engagement to the viewer as well as the painter. A reward to the time given. the longer you look the more you see and the more you get in return. for the painter the longer you work on this form the more you are rewarded for your time and the more personal energy is drawn into the painting. As you can see time is one of the major factors in hyper-realistic painting.
Over 4 evenings for 2 hours, we will work on small 8 x 10 paintings. The subject matter will be controlled to offer a range of problems and solutions to many of the underlining challenges to a hyper-realistic painter.
Each evening we will touch on one of the 4 major elements: volume, texture, transparency and lighting.
At the end of the class, you will have a greater understanding of the art style, the challenges and the rewards hyper-realism offers. whether you plan to paint in this style or simply want to understand different art movements more thoroughly, this class will offer the in-depth knowledge needed. with the added bonus of improving your skills with oil paint.
